تزئين و آرايش شهرها، بازارها، ميدان‌ها و ارگ‌هاي سلطنتي و بستن طاق نصرت به هنگام جشن‌هاي ملي ـ مذهبي و مراسم استقبال از شاهان و اميران و مهمانان بزرگ خارجي.<br /> <br /> اصطلاح آذين‌بندي در تاريخ و ادب فارسي به صورت‌هاي «آذين نهادن»، «آذين زدن» و «آئين‌بندي» نيز آمده است. منابع كهن تاريخي و ادبي بارها به آذين‌بندي‌ شهرها به مناسبت‌هاي مختلف اشاره مي‌كنند.&lt;sup&gt;1&lt;/sup&gt; نخستين باري كه مردم به مناسبت اعياد مذهبي به آذين‌بندي شهر پرداختند 352ق/ 963م بود. در اين سال امير معزالدوله آل‌بويه به مناسبت فرا رسيدن عيد غدير دستور داد مردم شهر و بازار و خانه‌هایشان را چراغاني كنند و آتشي بزرگ فراهم آورند و تا صبح طبل و شيپور بنوازند و جشن بگيرند. از آن زمان به بعد، مسلمانان هنگام فرا رسيدن اعياد بزرگ به چراغاني و آذين‌بندي خانه‌ها و شهرهاي خود مي‌پردازند.&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt; آذين‌بندي و چراغانی کردن شهرها در دورة صفوي رواج فراواني داشت. مثلاً، مردم مناطق مختلف ايران هنگام ورود شاه عباس اول (حك 996-1038ق/ 1587- 1629م) به شهرهايشان با داربست‌هايي از گلبن‌ها و شاخه‌هاي سرو و چنار آذين‌ مي‌بستند و ديوار و سقف بازار و خانه‌ها را با تصاويري از چين و فرنگ مي‌آراستند.<br /> <br /> رسمي و اجباري بودن آذين‌بندي‌ها در دورة صفوي و بي‌گاه و با مناسبت برپاکردن جشن و آذین‌بندی و خرج‌ها و تشريفات سنگيني که با این کار بر مردم تحميل مي‌شد، سبب نارضايتي و شكايت مردم شده بود.&lt;sup&gt;3&lt;/sup&gt;<br /> <br /> پس از صفويان نيز رسم آذين‌بندي كم و بيش ادامه يافت. متون فراواني از دوره‌هاي افشاريان و زند و قاجار به چراغاني و آذين‌بندي شهرها در جشن‌هاي نوروز و اعياد مذهبي يا استقبال از شاهان اشاره كرده‌اند. در دورة قاجار آتش‌بازي&lt;sup&gt;*&lt;/sup&gt;
