روزنامة سياسي، اجتماعي و اقتصادي كه هر بامداد از تاريخ 25 آذرماه 1346ش تا تاريخ 16 مرداد ماه 1358ش منتشر مي‌شد. صاحب امتياز آن، حسين اهري و فريده كامكار شاهرودي، سردبير، مسعود بهنود و مدير عامل و رياست شوراي تحريريه، داريوش همايون بود. اين روزنامه به قطع 42×60 سانتي‌متر و در 8 صفحه منتشر مي‌شد. در اوضاع دهة چهل طبقة جديدي از مديران، متخصصّان تكنوكرات و روشنفكران با اين ديدگاه تازه ظهور يافتند كه با خواندن روزنامه‌اي حرفه‌اي و صبحگاهي و بالطّبع با آگاهي از تحوّلات داخلي و خارجي در محل كارشان حضور به هم رسانند. در چنين فضايي با عدم وجود روزنامه‌اي با ويژگي‌هاي مذكور، آيندگان به ميدان آمد. در حالي‌كه از امكانات محدود مالي و فني برخوردار بود.&lt;sup&gt;1&lt;/sup&gt; سوابق روزنامه‌نگاري و ناشر آن و جذب گروهي از روزنامه‌نگاران جوان و فعال موقعيت ممتاز آن را موجب شد&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt;  و شور و رقابتي در تمام نشريات ايجاد كرد&lt;sup&gt;3&lt;/sup&gt; و با تكيه بر اصل آگاهي و خبر رساني و نيز سبك نگارش مقاله‌ها به ويژه سرمقاله‌هايش به روزنامه‌اي متفاوت تبديل شد. پس از چند سال، آيندگان شامل دو ضميمه شد: الف. آيندگان روستا: هفته نامه‌اي كشاورزي و اجتماعي براي روستائيان به سردبيري غلامحسين نظري كه از 1350ش تا 1358ش منتشر مي‌شد. اين هفته‌نامه به قطع 42×60 سانتي‌متر و شامل 4 صفحه بود. ب. آيندگان ادبي كه در دو دوره منتشر شد: دورة اول، شروع انتشارش، 11 بهمن ماه 1352ش بود و به قطع 42×60 سانتي‌متر در 8 صفحه منتشر مي‌شد. هفته‌نامة ادبي آيندگان شامل: شعر، نثر، ترجمه، بررسي كتاب‌ (براي اولين بار در يك روزنامة ايراني) و مسائل آموزشي بود. دورة دوم، از تاريخ 13 ارديبهشت 1357ش، ماهنامه‌اي ادبي شد. قطع آن همچون سابق ولي صفحات آن به 16 صفحه افزايش يافت. هوشنگ وزيري در سرمقالة اولين شمارة دورة دوم آيندگان ادبي همچون دورة اول و در تداوم وظيفه گردانندگان آن، «نبودي فرهنگي براي غلبه بر واپس‌ماندگي» را ذكر كرده است.&lt;sup&gt;3&lt;/sup&gt;
