در فَريوُمَد از ولايت جوين در خراسان زاده شد.<sup>1</sup> مدتي مانند پدرش به شغل ديواني پرداخت. در ابتدا خواجه علاءالدين محمد، وزير سلطان خدابنده و پس از او و برادرش طغاتيمور، حاكم گرگان را ستود. آنگاه رهسپار خراسان و هرات شد و امراي سربدار و آل كرت را مدح گفت.<sup>2</sup> در 743ق / 1342م در جنگ ميان امير وجيه الدين سربداري و معزالدين حسين كرت اسير شد و ''ديوان'' اشعارش به غارت رفت. پس از رهايي بار ديگر ديوانش را گردآوري كرد.<sup>3</sup> بخش پاياني زندگاني او در سبزوار و فريومد به قناعت و گوشهگيري گذشت.<sup>4</sup> او مسلمان و شيعة امامي بود و قصايد غرّايي در مدح خاندان رسالت و امامان، به ويژه حضرت علي (ع) سرود. از شعراي متقدم مانند: فردوسي، عنصري و انوري اشعاري را تضمين كرد.<sup>5</sup> شهرتش بيشتر مديون قطعه سرايي او بود. به جز قطعه در قصيده، غزل و رباعي نيز توانايي داشت. سادگي و رواني كلمات، استفاده از ديوان شاعران متقدم، پايبندي به اصول اخلاقي و آوردن جمع محالات از صنايع بديع، را ميتوان از ويژگيهاي مهم شعر او شمرد.<sup>6</sup><br />
