تاريخنگار پرآوازة ايراني در حارث آباد بيهق (نزديك سبزوار كنوني) چشم به جهان گشود.<sup>1</sup> پدرش حسين از خواجگان بودو با بزرگان آن روزگار مجالست داشت. از آغاز زندگاني بيهقي اطلاع چنداني در دست نيست.<sup>2</sup> گويند كه در نيشابور كسب دانش كرد. سپس به دربار سلطان محمود غزنوي (حك 389ـ421ق) راه يافت و نزد بونصر / ابونصر مشكان (د 431ق / 1039م)، رئيس ديوان رسايل به دبيري پرداخت.<sup>3</sup> شايستگي او نه تنها توجه بونصر، بلكه عنايت بزرگاني چون احمد حسن ميمندي و احمد عبدالصمد را به خود جلب كرد.<sup>4</sup> پس از مرگ بونصر با جانشين وي، ابوسهل زوزني ناسازگاري در پيش گرفت و از سمت خود استعفاء داد.<sup>5</sup> در روزگار عزالدوله عبدالرشيد، غزنوي (حك 421ـ433ق) صاحب ديوان رسايل شد. اما مدتي بعد به سبب تهمت حاسدان از منصب خود بركنار شد و به زندان افتاد.<sup>5</sup> در اثر اين رويداد، بسياري از يادداشت ها و رونوشت اسنادي را كه تهيه ديده بود، از دست داد و بعدها از اين بابت اظهار تأسف كرد.<sup>7</sup> در 444 ق پس از يورش طغرل شاه سلجوقي بر عبدالرشيد و قتل آن سلطان، به امر طغرل شاه سلجوقي به زندان قلعه انتقال يافت.<sup>8</sup> پس از رهايي باقي عمر را به كار تأليف و تدوين مشغول شد.<sup>9</sup> با بسياري از فضلا و سياستمداران چون بوحنيفة اسكافي، ابوالقاسم حصيري، خواجه بوسعد عبدالغفار و ديگران به مصاحبت پرداخت و در تكميل تاريخش از آنان ياري گرفت.<sup>10</sup> از آثارش ميتوان: مقامات بونصر مشكان شامل مجموعة حكايات و اسناد؛ زينت الكتاب در شرح وظايف ديوان خانه و مهمتر از همه تاريخ سلسلة غزنويان را كه به تاريخ بيهقي<sup>*</sup> شهرت دارد،نام برد.<sup>11</sup><br />
