اهل اَسْفِزار (امروزه از توابع هرات). به گفتة قطب الدين شيرازي در ''نهاية الافكار''، اسفزاري در كنار عمرخيام و چند تن ديگر، به فرمان ملكشاه سلجوقي و وزيرش خواجه نظام الملك از 467ق براي رصد اعتدال بهاري (پيدا كردن لحظة تحويل سال شمسي) و اصلاح تقويم رايج ايران به كار مشغول شد كه در 485ق با كشته شدن سلطان و وزير ناتمام ماند. وي دست كم تا 506ق با خيام ارتباط داشت و اندكي پس از اين سال درگذشت. <sup>1و2و4</sup> <br />
