'''شهر انزلي،''' به عنوان يكي از بندرهاي بزرگ و مهم درياي خزر و بزرگترين بندر استان گيلان، با مختصات جغرافيايي "00 '28 ْ49 طول شرقي و "30 '27 ْ37 عرض شمالي و ارتفاع 25- متر،<sup>5</sup> در فاصلة 363 كيلومتري تهران و 39 كيلومتري مركز استان (رشت) قرار دارد<sup>6</sup> و به دليل موقعيت جغرافيايي، سوقالجيشي و نظامي داراي اهميت ويژهاي است. «زق رودخانه» و «لير بازار رودگا» نيز دو رود دايمي هستند كه پس از عبور از شهر، به دريا ميريزند.<sup>7</sup><br />

كشاورزي، دامداري، ماهيگيري و صنايع مرتبط با شيلات و نيز صنايع دستي، بخشي از اشتغالات مردم را تشكيل ميدهد. بندرانزلي و روستاها و مناطق اطراف نزديك به دريا، به دليل موقعيت مناسب سواحل خود، هر سال پذيراي تعداد بسياري گردشگر است كه زمينهساز اشتغال مستقيم و غير مستقيم بسياري از ساكنان شهرستان شده است. تأسيسات بندري و گمركي و موقعيت ارتباط دريايي اين شهر با بندرهاي داخلي و خارجي نيز، جايگاه ويژهاي به اين شهر بخشيده، به گونهاي كه هم در گذشته و هم در حال حاضر به صورت يكي از دروازههاي ورودي و خروجي كالا و مسافر به خارج از كشور درآمده است. <br />

موقعيت جغرافيايي انزلي در گذشته نيز مورد توجه بود و به همين دليل در زمانهاي مختلف از جمله در جنگهاي جهاني اول و دوم جهاني به اشغال ارتش روسيه در آمد. خسرو خان گرجي كه در 1230ق / 1815م حكومت گيلان را داشت، بناهاي زيادي در انزلي ساخت و پيش از آن بندري كوچك بود كه اهميت و قدمت چنداني نداشت.<sup>8</sup> <br />

بندرانزلي در زمان رضاشاه پهلوي، به بندر پهلوي (شهريور 1314ش) تغيير نام پيدا كرد؛ اما پس از سرنگوني حكومت پهلوي، نام گذشتة خود را بازيافت. جمعيت شهر بندرانزلي در 1375ش تعداد 98544 تن بود<sup>9</sup> كه طبق برآوردها در 1384ش به 102925 تن رسيده است.<sup>10</sup> <br />
