با اينكه روزگار اشكانيان دورة تسامح ديني بود، احتمالاً خود ايشان زرتشتي بودهاند.<sup>2</sup> هر چند مداركي دربارة زرتشتيگري اشكانيان وجود دارد، اين اسناد به سرزمين اصلي ايران تعلق ندارد و بيشتر به سرزمينهاي مجاور، مانند ارمنستان و آسياي صغير مربوط ميشود.<sup>3</sup> اين احتمال هست كه كمبود اطلاعات دربارة دين عصر پارتيان، به سبب تبليغات منفي ساسانيان در اين باره بوده باشد.<sup>4</sup> به روايت متن پهلويِ ''دينكرد''<sup>*</sup>، ولاش (اول ؟) اشكاني فرمان داد تا ''اوستا''<sup>*</sup> و زند را كه اسكندر مقدوني پراكنده كرده بود، گردآوري كنند.<sup>5</sup> با وجود اين، اسناد به دست آمده از شهر نِسا نشان ميدهد كه پارتيان پيش از اين تاريخ نيز زرتشتي بودند. مردم نسا در عصر اشكاني تقويم زرتشتي را به كار ميبردند كه نامهاي زرتشتيِ ماهها و روزها در آن ديده ميشود.<sup>6</sup> <br />

مطالب ذكر شده در منابع يوناني و رومي نيز اعتقاد به آئين زرتشت را در عصر اشكانيان تأييد ميكند. بر اين اساس، ايرانيان مردگان خود را در فضاي باز قرار ميدادند و سپس استخوانها را در اَستودان جاي ميدادند. همچنين، آتش جاودان در شهر آساك نگهداري ميشد.<sup>7</sup> <br />

گزارش مربوط به سفر تيرداد، شاهزادة اشكاني به روم نيز نشان ميدهد كه وي به سبب پرهيز از آلودن آب، سفر دشوار زميني را برگزيد.<sup>8</sup> روايت بعضي از اين دسته نويسندگان نيز، شاهدي است بر اين كه بسياري از آئينهاي موجود در «ونديداد» در زمان اشكانيان اجرا ميشده است.<sup>9</sup> <br />
