كهگيلويه از يك هزار سال پيش زيستگاه گروههاي كوچندة چادرنشين بوده است. در سدة 4ق/10م در ناحية كوهستاني فارس، كه بعداً كهگيلويه ناميده شد، 5 زمَه كُرد (كوچندة شبان) مسكن و چراگاه داشتند.<sup>1</sup> از قديم تا اوايل دورة اسلامي، ناحية رِوِن كهگيلويه در ميانة شمال و شرق بهبهان ييلاق يا «تابستاننشين» طايفة شبانكارة فارس بوده است.<sup>2</sup> <br />

3 گروه ايلي- قومي جاكي، آقاجري<sup>*</sup> و باوي<sup>*</sup>، يا بابويي از ديرباز در سرزمين كهگيلويه شناخته شده بودند و از آنها در متون جغرافيايي و تاريخي قديم ياد شده است. جاكيها از مهاجران لُر به اين سرزمين بودند كه به دو شاخة عمدة چاربنيچه، و ليراوي تقسيم ميشدند.<sup>3</sup> چاربنيچه به 4 ايل بويراحمدي<sup>*</sup>، چَرام<sup>*</sup>، دشمنزياري<sup>*</sup> و نويي، و ليراوي به دو دسته ايلات ليراوي كوه و ليراوي دشت تقسيم ميشدند. ايلات ليراوي كوه شامل بَهْمئي<sup>*</sup>، تِيْبي<sup>*</sup> (طيبي)، شيرالي (شيرعالي) و يوسفي و ايلات ليراوي دشت، كه در صحراي بين بلوك زيدون و حيات داود زندگي ميكردند، شامل باوي و آقاجري بودند.<sup>4</sup> امروزه فقط 6 ايل مستقل بويراحمدي، بهمئي، چرام، دشمنزياري، تيبي و باوي در اين استان ميزيند و بويراحمدي مهمترين و بزرگترين آنها به شمار ميرود. <br />
