قلمرو ايل در بخش بزرگي از مغرب منطقة كهگيلويه قرار دارد. تا اوايل سدة 14ق/20م ايل بهمئي به دو طايفة احمدي و محمدي تقسيم ميشد<sup>1</sup> كه در نيمة جنوبي و نيمة شمالي كهگيلويه ميزيستند.<sup>2</sup> در اواخر سلطنت ناصرالدين شاه (1264-1313ق/1848-1896م) طايفة محمدي به دو طايفة بهمئي محمدي گرمسيري و بهمئي محمدي سردسيري تقسيم شدند<sup>3</sup>. بعداً پس از درگيريهايِ ميانْ طايفگي، طايفة احمدي نيز تقسيم شد و تيرههايي از آن جدا شدند و طايفة اَلاديني (علاءالديني) را تشكيل دادند.<sup>4</sup> و بهمئيهاي احمدي هم به دو طايفة جلالي و بيژني يا «بيجَني» تقسيم شدند.<sup>5</sup><br />

بهمئيها تا چند دهة پيش كوچ ميكردند. شمار كوچندگان آن تا اوايل دهة چهل سدة 14ش، 85 درصد از جمعيت حدود 37 هزار خانواری بهمئي بود.<sup>6</sup> در 1366ش مركز آمار شمار كوچندگان بهمئي را 3014 خانوار و 20286 تن آورده است.<sup>7</sup> آنها بيشتر از راه دامداري و قدري هم زراعت زندگی میگذراندند.<br />

هر يك از طايفههاي بزرگ بهمئي زير نظر خان يا رئيس طايفة خود عمل ميكرد. خانهاي ايل همه با يكديگر خويشاوند بودند و از يك نياي مشترك نسب ميبردند. به واسطة رابطة خويشاوندي ميان خانها و تقسيم قدرت و منصب ميان خود، فضاي كم و بيش آرام و صلحآميزي ميان ايل برقرار بود.<sup>8</sup> <br />
