ايل جاف در گذشته (حدود قرن 10 و 11) اتحادية بزرگي از تمام تيرهها و طوايف جاف را شامل ميشد. بعدها دولتهايي، مانند صفويان، كه از تشكيل چنين اتحاديهاي به سبب شورش عليه خود بيمناك بودند با كوچاندن و پراكندن طوايف و تيرههاي بزرگْ ايل، اين اتحاديه را از هم پاشيدند. در نتيجه ايل جاف به سه شعبة جاف مرادي، جاف جوانرود و جاف گوران تقسيم شد. جوانرود و گوران كه به جافهاي ايران معروفند در مناطق جوانرود و گوران كردستان و جاف مرادي كه به جاف عراق مشهورند، در كردستان عراق به سر ميبرند.<sup>2</sup> <br />

گروهي از مردم ايل جاف كوچرو هستند و مابقي يكجانشين شدهاند. كوچروها در نواحي سردسير و گرمسير استانهاي كردستان، كرمانشاه ييلاق و قشلاق ميپردازند.<sup>3</sup> <br />

جاف جوانرود به 15 تيره و طايفه مانند قبادي، باباخاني، ولدبيگي و ... تقسيم ميشود. جاف گوران نيز از اتحاد 7 طايفه و جاف مرادي از 32 تيره و طايفه تشكيل شدهاند.<sup>4</sup><br />

هستة اصلي ايل جاف را طايفة بيگزادگان تشكيل ميدهد. سران و رؤساي اصلي جاف (پاشايان) همگي از اين طايفه برخاستهاند.<sup>5</sup> <br />

آمار متناقضي از جمعيت كل جافها در دست است. شمار كوچندگان ايل جاف در 1377ش 1323 خانوار و 7655 نفر گزارش شده است.<sup>6</sup> <br />

مردم ايل سني مذهباند و به دامپروري و به خصوص پرورش انواع بز و كشاورزي مشغولند.<sup>7</sup><br />
