خاستگاه اصلي اين ايل در سرزمين عثمانيها بوده است كه در زمان شاه عباس صفوي (حك 995-1037ق / 1587-1628م) به ايران كوچانده و در نواحي آذربايجان، كردستان و قزوين اسكان داده ميشوند. در 932-933ق، شخصي به نام آتماجه كه از قزلباشها بود با گروهي از تركها در امپراتوري عثماني دست به شورش زدند و به نواحي مختلف هجوم بردند و به قتل و غارت و راهزني پرداختند. نهايتاً آتماجه و گروهش مقابل نيروهاي بيگلربيگي ديار بكر ـ خسرو پاشا ـ توان مقاومت نيافتند و به ايران گريختند. به گزارش منابع تاريخي ترك گروه آتماجه بعدها به جلالي معروف شدند. برخي جلاليها را كرد دانستهاند و از اختلافات و درگيريهايشان با عثمانيها و كوچ به سمت كردستان و... كرد بودن آنها را نتيجهگيري كردهاند.<sup>1</sup> <br />

نام ايل از نام بنيانگذار ايل ـ جلال ـ گرفته شده است.<sup>2</sup> بيشتر جلاليها يكجانشين شدهاند؛ با اين حال شمار زيادي از آنها كوچنده هستند و بين روستاهاي شهرستانهاي چالدران و ماكو استان آذربايجان غربي ييلاق و قشلاق ميكنند.<sup>3</sup> كوچندگان جلالي 2/48 درصد خانوارهاي كوچندة استان آذربايجان غربي شامل ميشوند.<sup>4</sup> <br />
