برخي تعيين قوميت ملكشاهيها را به سبب درهم آميختگي با اقوام اقوام كرد، لر و لك دشوار ميدانند. ملكشاهيها در سرزميني، كه به نام آنها ناميده ميشود، در بين شهرستان مهران و قلعهدره استان ايلام پراكندهاند.<sup>1</sup> ايل ملكشاهي از 13 طايفه تشكيل شده است. هر طايفه به چند تيره و هر تيره به چند مال تقسيم ميشود. رئيس ايل را «خان» يا «توشمال» و رئيس هر طايفه و تيره را كدخدا مينامند.<sup>2</sup> <br />

شماري از مردم ايل ملكشاهي اسكان يافتهاند و گروههايي از آنها به مناطق سردسير و گرمسير كوچ ميكنند. كوچندگان ملكشاهي بين دهستانهاي بخشهاي اركوازي، صالحآباد و مركزي شهرستان مهران استان ايلام ييلاق و قشلاق ميكنند.<sup>3</sup><br />

شمار كوچندگان اين ايل در 1377ش 1046 خانوار و 7553 نفر برآورد شده است.<sup>4</sup> از مهمترين مشاغل ايل ملكشاهي ميتوان به زراعت و كشت گندم و جو و ذرت، دامپروري و صنايع دستي مانند: گليم و قالي و جاجيم اشاره كرد.<sup>5</sup> <br />
