هركيها در غرب و جنوب شهرستان اورميه در منطقهاي زندگی میکنند كه از شمال به برادُست در شهرستان سلماس، از جنوب به اشنويه، از خاور به اورميه و از باختر به دو سرزمين تركيه و عراق محدود است.<sup>1</sup> گروهي از هركيها نيز در بخشهايي از سرزمين عراق، به ويژه در منطقة سوران، به سر ميبرند.<sup>2</sup> <br />

ايل هركي از 3 طايفة مَندان، سيدان و سَرهاتي و هر يك از آنها از چند طايفه، باوْ، تيره و زوَمْه شكل مييابد.<sup>3</sup> اعضاي دو طايفة مندان و سرهاتي با يكديگر پيوند خويشاوندي دارند. در جنگ و ستيزهاي درون ايلي اين دو طایفه با هم، و در جنگهاي برون ايلي هر سه طایفة ایل با هم متحد ميشوند. «رِسْپي» (ريشسفيد) و «بيگ» يا «خان» دو مقام ايلي- سياسي بودند كه اولي زُومَه (گروهي از عشاير دامدار كه یک واحد اقتصادي را در طایفه تشكيل ميدادند) و دومي تيره و طايفه را سرپرستي ميكردند. در رأس ايل نيز «ايلبيگ» قرار داشت. از زمان دِهنشين شدن ايل، عنوان «كدخدا»، مسئول ادارة امور دِه نيز به مناصب ايلي افزوده شد.<sup>4</sup> در ايل هركي مقام ايلبيگي انتخابي بود و از تيرة لِياسي طايفة سيدان برگزيده ميشد. عزل و نصب او فقط بر عهدة اعضای تيرة لياسي و 13 تيرة خويشاوند آنها بود، كه به «پيس آقا» معروف بودند.<sup>5</sup> در گذشته، هركيها همه كوچنده و دامدار بودند، ليكن از چند دهة پيش بيشترشان يكجانشين شده و به زراعت ميپردازند. شمار كوچندگان هركي طبق سرشماري 1377ش 1772 خانوار بوده است.<sup>6</sup> <br />
