برخي بر اساس ويژگي‌هاي ظاهري و اندامي براهویی‌ها، آنها را غيربلوچ دانسته‌اند.&lt;sup&gt;3&lt;/sup&gt; برخي از محققان هم با توجه به خاستگاه اولية براهويي‌ها در جنوب شرقي پنجگور در جبيري، آنها را از لُرِهای ماماسني (مَمَسني) دانسته‌اند. ديگران نيز اصل آنها را به اختلاف كُرد، دراويدي، بلوچ و از مهاجران هندي ذكر كرده‌اند.&lt;sup&gt;4&lt;/sup&gt;<br /> <br /> كوچك‌ترين تا بزرگ‌ترين واحد اجتماعي در سازمان طایفگی براهويي‌ها عبارتست از: شلوار ← تيره ← طايفه. براهويي‌هاي ايران و افغانستان و پاكستان از 27 طايفه تركيب يافته‌اند. 8 طايفة آنها اصلي (مانند قلندراني، ميرواري و...) و بقيه وابسته هستند (مانند مِنْگل، بنگلزيي، بَيزنْجو و...).&lt;sup&gt;5&lt;/sup&gt;<br /> <br /> <br /> براهويي در مناطقي در پاكستان، افغانستان، تركمنستان و ايران پراكنده‌اند. براهويي‌هاي ايران در حوزة بلوچستان و در نواحي سراوان، خاش و سيستان سكونت دارند. براهويي‌هاي كوچنده نيز بين مناطق خاش و قطار خنجك و جون‌آباد ييلاق و قشلاق مي‌كنند.&lt;sup&gt;6&lt;/sup&gt; <br /> <br /> براهويي‌ها اكثراً دامدارند. آمار جمعيت كل براهويي‌ها در منابع نيامده است. كوچندگان براهويي در 1377ش، 583 خانوار برآورد شده‌اند.&lt;sup&gt;7&lt;/sup&gt; <br /> <br /> زبان براهويي منشأ دراويدي دارد كه ممكن است زبان اقوام بومي ارتفاعات كلات قبل از ورود ايلات و طوايف براهويي و بلوچ به اين سرزمين بوده باشد.&lt;sup&gt;8&lt;/sup&gt;
