محمد حسين بن خلف تبريزي متخلص به برهان در 1062ق / 1652م آن را به نام سلطان عبدالله قطب شاه، هفتمين پادشاه شيعي مذهب و از سلاطين جنوب هند (حك 1035ـ 1038ق / 1626-1628م) در حيدرآباد دكن تأليف كرده است. چهار كتاب ''فرهنگ جهانگيري''، ''[[لغت فرس اسدی|مجمع الفرس]]، سرمة سليماني'' و ''صحاح الادويه'' اساس كار برهان در اين تأليف بودهاند.<sup>1</sup> اين فرهنگ را ميتوان نسخة بدل ''فرهنگ جهانگيري'' وليكن بدون توضيحات آن دانست.<sup>2</sup> از لحاظ ترتيب، حرف اول لغت را «گفتار» و حرف دوم و سوم آن را «بيان» تشكيل ميدهد. در مقدمة كتاب نُه فايده آمده كه فايدة اول در بيان معرفت زبان دَري و پهلوي و فايدة نهم دربارة قواعد دستور املاست.<sup>3</sup> به رغم آنكه بسياري از لغات را مؤلف ''برهان قاطع'' از دساتير گرفته، اما در هيچ يك از آنها به آن اشاره نميكند.<sup>4</sup> بزرگترين نقص ''برهان قاطع'' حذف شواهد شعري و نياوردن شاهد و مثال براي آنها است.<sup>5</sup> از مزاياي اين فرهنگ بيرون كشيدن و يكجا گردآوردن لغات و تركيبات از فرهنگها و منابع ديگر است كه خواننده را از مراجعه به كتابهاي لغت مختلف بي نياز ميكند. مجموع لغاتي كه در اين فرهنگ آمده بر حسب شمارش چند پژوهنده و بر اساس چاپهاي مختلف، 19060، 19417، 20149، 20211، 20215 لغت است. چند كتاب از جمله ''سراج اللغات''، اثر خان آرزو و ''قاطع برهان''، از غالب دهلوي در ردّ و اعتراض به آن نوشته شدهاند.<sup>6</sup> <br />
