بيستون كه بگستان يا بغستان (بهستان) خوانده ميشد مورد توجه پادشاهان هخامنشي و برخوردار از قداست ويژهاي بود.<sup>1</sup> گذشته از آثار دوران سلوكي<sup>*</sup> و پارتي<sup>*</sup>، كتيبة داريوش كه به اقتباس از كتيبة آنوبانيني[1] شاه لولوبي[2] بر كوه بيستون در سر پل ذهاب ميباشد،<sup>2</sup> مهمترين اطلاعات را دربارة وي و هخامنشيان<sup>*</sup> ارائه ميدهد. تصوير اهورا مزدا، 9 نفر شورشي و داريوش كه در جلو دو تن نيزهدار و كماندار پا بر سينة گئومات (بردياي دروغين)گذاشته است<sup>3</sup> همراه با سه متن به زبانهاي عيلامي، بابلي، فارسي باستان و به خط ميخي، بر روي كتيبه نقر شدهاند.<sup>4</sup> متنها دربارة نام و نسب، مقام خانوادگي داريوش، شرح به قدرت رسيدن او و دفع شورشها، توضيح دربارة «ملل تابعة» هخامنشيان و دعا براي سرزمين و مردمان آن ميباشند،<sup>(5)</sup> كه نخستين بار در 1835م رمزگشايي شد<sup>(6)</sup> و اكنون بر اثر فرسايش كوه در معرض تخريب است. <br />
