نسبش با 16 واسطه به شيخ ابراهيم زاهد گيلاني (م 700ق / ؟م) صوفي پرآوازة سدة 7ق مي‌رسيد. خاندانش همه اهل فضل و دانش بودند.&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt; چون پدرش از مردم لاهيجان بود، به لاهيجي شهرت گرفت. برخي نيز شهرتش را حزين اصفهاني و گروهي هم حزين لاهيجي اصفهاني نوشته‌اند.&lt;sup&gt;3&lt;/sup&gt; حزين در هشت سالگي به يادگيري تجويد و قرائت ''قرآن''كريم مشغول شد. سپس حديث و فقه، هيئت، ‌تفسير، منطق، ‌طب و هندسه آموخت.&lt;sup&gt;4&lt;/sup&gt; نزد پدرش و گروهي از اديبان و علماي آن عصر تلمذ كرده است.&lt;sup&gt;5&lt;/sup&gt; حزين پس از مرگ پدر (1127ق) و مادرش (1129ق) مدت كوتاهي زادگاهش را ترك گفت و در شيراز به سر برد.&lt;sup&gt;6&lt;/sup&gt; در 1135ق/ ؟م پس از محاصرة اصفهان به دست افاغنه، ‌حزين از آنجا گريخت. او پس از مدتي توقف در خوانسار و خرم آباد، ‌قصد حج كرد، ‌اما در طول سفر بيمار شد و ناچار چندي در يمن ماند.&lt;sup&gt;7&lt;/sup&gt;
