اين حزب در 1322ش توسط گروهي از جوانان مذهبي تشكيل شد.<sup>1</sup> نظريهپردازان اين نهضت، محمد نخشب و جلالالدين آشتياني، معتقد بودند كه بايد سوسياليسم را از قيد ماترياليسم و خداپرستي را از قيد خرافات رها كرد. آنها در پي تحقق اهداف خود با تشكيل جلسات بحث و انتقاد مبارزات سياسي و اجتماعي خود را آغاز كردند.<sup>2</sup> در اواسط 1329ش پس از ائتلاف با حزب ايران فعاليتهاي خود را در زمينة ملي شدن صنعت نفت گسترش دادند.<sup>3</sup> بروز اختلاف بين جوانان نهضت خداپرستان سوسياليست و گردانندگان حزب ايران منجر به انشعاب جوانان از حزب ايران شد و تشكيل جمعيت آزادي مردم ايران شد. هدف جمعيت ارتقاء سطح آگاهي مردم دربارة خطر توطئههاي دربار و عوامل ضدملي بود. اين گروه با انتشار روزنامة '''''مردم ايران''''' در 1333ش حزب مردم ايران را پايهگذاري كردند.<sup>4</sup> بعد از كودتاي نظامي 28 مرداد با انتشار روزنامة '''''راه مصدق''''' و برگزاري تظاهرات سهم مؤثري در مبارزات ملي داشتند. پس از برقراري جمهوري اسلامي و تشكيل كابينة موقت مهندس بازرگان تعدادي از اعضاي اين كابينه از اعضاي قبلي اين حزب بود.<sup>5</sup> اين حزب در حال حاضر فعاليت علني ندارد.<br />
