بيشتر پژوهشگران بر اين باورند كه از اواخر دوران هخامنشي در ديانت زرتشتي شايع در غرب ايران، اين اعتقاد رواج يافته بود كه اهوره مزدا و اهريمن دو برادر همزاد و فرزندان زروان (زمان بيكرانه)، هستند.<sup>2</sup> بنا بر روايات زرواني؛ زروان مبدأ اعلي است كه پيش از به وجود آمدن كائنات، وجود داشت. او اراده كرد كه آفرينندهاي به وجود آورد تا زمين و آسمان و آنچه را كه در آنهاست بيافريند، به اين ترتيب در بطنِ زمان بيكران، خالق موجودات (اورمزد) هستي يافت. اما او به شك افتاد و در نتيجه اهريمن<sup>*</sup> يا عامل نابودكننده نيز در بطن او شكل گرفت.<sup>3</sup> <br />

زروان اهريمن را براي 9 يا به روايتي 12 هزار سال، فرمانرواي جهان كرد اما قيد كرد كه پس از اين مدت، فرمانروايي عالم از آن اورمزد خواهد بود.<sup>4</sup> زروان در آسمان(سپهر) تجسم مييابد و تقدير او با واسطة آن ـ و در نتيجه با واسطة ثوابت و سيارات ـ در جهان جاري ميگردد. لذا آئين زرواني روي هم رفته، مكتبي جبري بوده است.<sup>5</sup> <br />

آئين زرواني در دورة ساسانيان در ميان جامعة روشنفكران نفوذ قابل توجهي يافت و اين نفوذ در دورة اسلامي هم ميان مزداپرستان ادامه پيدا كرد، ولي سرانجام معتقدان به ثنويت پيروزي نهايي را به دست آوردند و آئين زرواني به فراموشي سپرده شد.<sup>6</sup> <br />
