سديدالدين يا نورالدين محمد بن محمد از اعقاب عبدالرحمان بن عوف، صحابة مشهور پيامبر (ص) بود و به همين سبب خاندانش به عوفي شهرت يافتند.<sup>1</sup> جدّش امام ابوطاهر يحيي نيز از دانشمندان بود و در علم حديث و معرفت انساب عرب و اسامي رجال تبحّر داشت. عوفي در بخارا زاده شد،<sup>2</sup> و در آنجا به تحصيل علوم ادبي، عربي و حديث پرداخت. پس از آن در 597ق / 1201م به سمرقند رفت و ديوان انشاي قلج ارسلان ابن قلج طمغاج خان (د 609ق / 1212م) را به عهده گرفت.<sup>3</sup> حدود 600ق / 1204م از فرارود به شهرهاي خوارزم، مرو، نيشابور، هرات، اسفزار، اسفراين و شهر نو در خراسان و به سيستان، فره و غزنين سفر كرد. در 603ش / 1207م در نيشابور به وعظ و تذكير مشغول بود.<sup>4</sup> تا 612ق / 1215م در سجستان (سيستان) سكنا داشت. سپس ظاهراً به بخارا بازگشت و بعد از طريق خراسان، غزنين، سند و گجرات به لاهور رفت و به خدمت عين الملك فخرالدين حسين اشعري، وزير ناصرالدين قُباجَه پيوست.<sup>5</sup> تذكرة مشهور خود ''لباب الالباب'' را نيز به نام عين الملك تأليف كرد. پس از 625ق / 1227م به خدمت شمسالدين اِلْتَتْمِش درآمد و كتاب ''جوامع الحكايات و لوامع الروايات'' خود را به نام وزير وي نوشت.<sup>6</sup> عوفي شاعر نيز بود، اما بيشتر در نثر مهارت داشت. كتاب منظوم ''مدايح السلطان'' و ترجمة ''الفرج بعد الشده''، نوشتة قاضي محسن تنوخي از عربي به فارسي از ديگر آثار وي هستند.<sup>7</sup> <br />
