ميرزا محمدعلي ملقب به خان و شمس الشعرا و متخلص به سروش، فرزند قنبرعلي اصفهاني سدهي، شاعر قصيده سراي سدة 13ق در اصفهان به دنيا آمد.<sup>1</sup> سلسلة نسب او به نجم ثاني از سرداران بنام شاه اسماعيل اول صفوي (حك 905ـ930ق / ؟م) ميرسيد. اجداش كارگزار ملوك بودند، اما پدرش پيشة قصابي داشت و روزگار را به سختي ميگذراند.<sup>2</sup> سروش در ابتداي جواني از زادگاهش به اصفهان رفت و چند سالي در ساية حمايت سيد بيدآبادي (م 1260ق / ؟م) مجتهد و مدرس مشهور آن دوره زيست و كمي خواندن و نوشتن آموخت.<sup>3</sup> سپس در دورة وليعهدي ناصرالدين شاه (حك 1264ـ1313ق / ؟م) در تبريز به خدمت آن شاهزاده راه يافت و با سرودن قصايدي در مدح او به شهرت رسيد. پس از جلوس ناصرالدين شاه در تهران ملك الشعراي دربار وي شد و ثروت فراواني اندوخت.<sup>4</sup> از آن پس سالها با سمت شاعر رسمي دربار به آسايش گذراند و سرانجام در تهران درگذشت. از آثارش ميتوان: ''شمس المناقب'' (به اهتمام ابراهيم مشتري طوسي، تهران، 1300ق)، در مدح و منقبت پيامبر (ص) و خاندان نبوّت، مثنوي ''روضةالانوار'' در ذكر واقعة كربلا، ديواني به نام زينة المدايح و قصايد، فتح نامهها و مثنويهاي (''ارديبهشتنامه، ساقينامه، الهينامه'') را نام برد. ''ديوان'' كامل او نخستين بار در 1339ـ1340ش با مقدمة جلال همايي و به اهتمام محمدجعفر محجوب در دوجلد به چاپ رسيد.<sup>5</sup> سروش دست كم هفت هزار بيت از نه هزار بيت قصايدش را از قصايد فرخي و بقيه را از منوچهري، عنصري، مسعود سعد، رودكي و ديگران پيروي كرده است.<sup>6</sup> به رغم صنعتگريهاي كه احياناً در كلامش وجود دارد، تا حدي به سرّ لطيفة سهل و ممتنع نيز دست مييابد.<sup>7</sup> <br />
