سعدالدين از مردم آذربايجان بود و در عهد اتابكان آذربايجان ميزيست. ظاهراً به وَراوي ـ آبادي كوچكي در كوههاي آذربايجان ميان اردبيل و تبريز و در نزديكي اهر ـ نسبت داشت.<sup>1</sup> او از ملازمان خواجه ابوالقاسم ربيبالدين هارون بن علي، وزير دانش دوست اتابك ازبك بن محمد بن ايلدگز (حك 607ـ 622ق/ ؟م) بود.<sup>2</sup> در سراسر زندگي با كتاب سرو كار داشت و از جستجو در حكايات و افسانههايي كه به نثر و نظم بر جاي مانده بود، باز نميماند.<sup>3</sup> در شاعري نيز دستي داشت و ابياتي ميسرود.<sup>4</sup> ميان 607 تا 622ق / ؟م كتاب مرزباننامه<sup>*</sup> اثر مرزبان بن رستم بن شروين را از زبان طبري به فارسي برگرداند و آن را به نام هارون بن علي مزيّن كرد.<sup>5</sup> اثر او عاري از سادگي است و از آوردن تركيبهاي نامستعمل عربي و نيز امثال و شواهد ديگران پرهيز كرده است.<sup>6</sup>همچنين نثر وي در مرزباننامه در بسياري از موارد با ايجاز همراه است.<sup>7</sup> او را در شمار آن دسته از نويسندگان سدة 7م دانستهاند كه به شيوة اشعار پيچيدة سبك عراقي، معاني و اصطلاحهاي علمي، به ويژه در طب، نجوم، صرف و نحو و اساطير را در قالب مضامين شعري به كار گرفتهاند.<sup>8</sup> مرزباننامة وراويني با تصحيح و تحشية ميرزامحمدخان قزويني (ليدن، انتشارات اوقاف گيب ، 1909م) چاپ شده است. چاپ منقحي از آن نيز توسط محمد روشن (تهران، 2535 / 1355) صورت گرفته است.<sup>9</sup> <br />
