سلسله‌اي از حكمرانان ايران (حك 247-304ق / 861-1003ق) منتسب به صفار (رويگر = مسگر) خاستگاه صفاريان روستاي قرنين سيستان بود و آنان نسب خود را به شاهان ايران باستان مي‌رساندند. يعقوب پسر ليث صفار از طبقة متوسط جامعه به كمك برادرانش علي و عمرو توانست نخستين حكومت مستقل ايران پس از اسلام را بنياد گذارد. توانايي نظامي و رفتار جوانمردانة اين عيارپيشه&lt;sup&gt;1&lt;/sup&gt; او را در جدال‌هاي فرقه‌اي و نبرد با خوارج پيروز ساخت و بخش‌هاي بزرگي از ايران مانند سيستان،&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt; كرمان، فارس و خراسان را فتح كرده و بر ربتيل شاه محلي كابل پيروز شد.&lt;sup&gt;3&lt;/sup&gt; او بدون رضايت خليفة عباسي طاهريان را برانداخت (259ق / 873م) و حضوري ناموفق نيز در طبرستان براي جنگ با علويان داشت.&lt;sup&gt;4&lt;/sup&gt; عدم تأييد او از سوي معتمد خليفة عباسي باعث شد كه به سوي بغداد حمله كند. اما در ديرالعاقول (گندي شاپور باستاني) از سپاهيان خليفه به فرماندهي الموفق شكست خورد و پيش از جبران شكست در همان جا درگذشت و از همان زمان ضعف صفاريان آغاز شد.&lt;sup&gt;5&lt;/sup&gt; برادر و جانشين او، عمرو، با خليفه كه درگير فرو نشاندن قيام زنگيان بود رسم مدارا در پيش گرفت و حكمراني فارس، كرمان و سيستان را به دست آورد و در جنگ با محمد بن طاهر خراسان را دوباره متصرف شد. اما در جنگ با امير اسماعيل ساماني بر سر خوارزم شكست خورده، اسير و به دربار خليفة عباسي فرستاده شد (287ق) و در آن‌جا فوت كرد يا كشته شد.&lt;sup&gt;6&lt;/sup&gt; سيستان به قلمرو سامانيان ضميمه شد. هر چند خلف بن احمد، طاهر، ليث بن علي، محمد و ديگري امراي صفاري در آن‌جا حكومت داشتند.&lt;sup&gt;7&lt;/sup&gt; امارت صفاريان «آفرينش نظامي»&lt;sup&gt;8&lt;/sup&gt; بود كه حكومت را به «عياري» و شيرمردي به دست آوردند. از اين رو ديوان عَرض (امور لشكري) اهميت بسيار داشت و دسته‌هاي نظامي غلامان، عياران، خوارج و... حضور گسترده‌اي در سپاه صفاري داشتند. <br /> <br /> صفاريان در امارت متكي به مردم و مظهر ميهن‌دوستي&lt;sup&gt;9&lt;/sup&gt; در برابر جور دستگاه خلفاي عباسي بودند. زبان فارسي به روزگار آنان احياء شد، شعر فارسي جايگزين شعر عربي گرديد و محمد وصيف سگزي، حنظله بادغيسي، فيروز مشرقي، ابوسليك گرگاني و ... از شعراي زمان صفاريان بودند.&lt;sup&gt;10&lt;/sup&gt;
