ميرزا لطفعلي خان صورتگر فرزند ميرزا آقاخان فرزند لطفعلي خان نقاش مشهور سدة 13 ق بود. در شيراز زاده شد. در مدرسة متوسطه شعاعيه به تحصيل پرداخت و ادب و عربي را نزد فرصت الدوله آموخت.<sup>1</sup> در هيجده سالگي براي ادامة تحصيل به هندوستان رفت و پس از دو سال به شيراز بازگشت. چندي در ادارة دارايي و وزارت معارف مشغول به كار شد و مجلة ادبي ''سپيده دم'' را به مدت چند سال منتشر كرد.<sup>2</sup> در 1306ش از طرف دولت براي تحصيل در رشته زبان و ادبيات انگليسي رهسپار لندن شد. پس از پايان تحصيلات به ايران بازگشت و در دانشكدة ادبيات و دانشسراي عالي به تدريس پرداخت.<sup>3</sup> بار ديگر در 1316ش براي ادامة تحصيل رهسپار لندن شد و با اخذ مدرك دكترا به كشور بازگشت. هنگام اقامت در لندن با دختري انگليسي ازدواج كرد و از وي صاحب يك پسر شد.<sup>4</sup> پس از ورود به ايران، به مشاغلي چون استادي دانشگاه، مديريت مجلة ''آموزش و پرورش''، رياست دانشكدة ادبيات دانشگاه شيراز، رياست دانشگاه شيراز و عضويت در فرهنگستان و شوراي فرهنگي دست يافت.<sup>5</sup> او شاعر نيز بود و حدود ده هزار بيت شعر به سبك خراساني سرود.<sup>6</sup> به روسيه، امريكا و پاكستان سفرهايي كرد. سرانجام در شيراز درگذشت. از آثارش ميتوان ''ترجمة عشاق ناپل، سخن سنجي، تاريخ ادبيات انگليس، برگهاي پراكنده، علم اقتصاد، ادبيات غنايي ايران'' و ''ادبيات توصيفي'' ايران را نام برد.<sup>7</sup> <br />
