ابوالقاسم متخلص به عارف فرزند ملاهادي وكيل در قزوين به دنيا آمد. تحصيلات قديم را در زادگاهش فراگرفت و پس از آن به هنر خوشنويسي و موسيقي پرداخت. فن موسيقي را نزد حاجي صادق خرازي آموخت.<sup>1</sup> به زودي در موسيقي مهارت يافت و به دنبال آن در ترانه سازي سرآمد معاصران خود شد. از بيست سالگي به سرودن شعرـ بيشتر از نوع غزل ـ روي آورد. در 1316 ق / ؟م به تهران آمد.<sup>2</sup> در اين شهر با بزرگان دربار قاجار آشنا شد و اشعارش را با صداي خوش و گرم خود در مجالس آنان ميخواند.<sup>3</sup> پس از كسب شهرت، مظفرالدين شاه (حك 1313 ـ 1324 ق / ؟م) وي را نزد خود طلبيد و به جرگة خادمان دربار درآورد.<sup>4</sup> با آغاز نهضت مشروطيت به مشروطهخواهان پيوست و هنر خود را در خدمت آزادي و حمايت از تودة مردم مظلوم ايران به كار گرفت و با اجراي سرودههاي ملي در كنسرتهاي گوناگون زبانزد خاص و عام شد.<sup>5</sup> عارف به نواحي غرب ايران، بغداد و استانبول سفر كرد و با آزاديخواهان آنجا به همكاري پرداخت. سرانجام در همدان درگذشت.<sup>6</sup> او در ترانهسرايي تحولي پديد آورد. ''كليات ديوان عارف قزويني'' را بارها عبدالرحمن سيف آزاد چاپ كرده است. در ميان ترانههاي ميهني او ترانة «از خون جوانان وطن لاله دميده» درخشش بيشتري دارد.<sup>7</sup> <br />
