از نوادگان امام حسن(ع) و از امام‌های معروف زیدیه بود كه دیلمستان، مازندران و گرگان را از تصرف سپاه خلیفه و اسپهبد قارن حكمران محلی خارج كرد&lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt; اما در 259ق/873م از یعقوب لیث شكست خورد. پس از او، برادرش محمد بن زید (داعی) (حك270-287ق/844-900م) حكومت را به دست گرفت و با احمد بن عبدالله خجستانی و رافع بن هرثمه از سرداران عرب در شمال شرق، جنگید و غالب آمد. امّا در حملة محمد بن هارون سردار امیر اسماعیل سامانی به گرگان، داعی در میدان جنگ كشته شد.&lt;sup&gt;3&lt;/sup&gt; حسن بن علی مشهور به ناصركبیر (اطروش) [1] (حك301-304ق / 914-917م) طبرستان را كه مدت 13سال جزء متصرفات سامانی بود به دست آورد. به دوران او حسن بن قاسم یكی دیگر از سادات حسنی معروف به داعی صغیر كه حاكم گیلان بود قیام نمود. اما ناصركبیر او را بخشید و جانشین خود نمود به دوران ناصركبیر وضع طبرستان رونق گرفت&lt;sup&gt;4&lt;/sup&gt; و با مرگ او حسن بن قاسم داعی صغیر (حك304-316ق/917-928م) به امارت نشست. او در نبرد با سیمجور سردار سامانی شكست خورد. اما در310ق/922م شكست خود را جبران كرد و نصر بن احمد سامانی را در 314ق/921م شكست داد. اما در نبرد با اسفار بن شیرویه سردار دیلمی كشته شد.&lt;sup&gt;5&lt;/sup&gt; سادات علوی طبرستان باعث رونق اسلام در گیلان و مازندران و گرگان شدند و چون شیعة زیدی بودند این شاخه از تشیع در این منطقه رواج یافت.&lt;sup&gt;6&lt;/sup&gt; حكومت آنان امارت استیلا به حساب می‌آید كه با استفاده از نارضایتی مردم از عمال حكومت طاهری به حكومت رسیدند&lt;sup&gt;7&lt;/sup&gt; و تحت فشار 3 نیروی فعال در طبرستان (صفاریان، سامانیان، خاندان‌های محلی) به ادامة حیات پرداختند. پس از آنان شاخة دیگری از علویان در گیلان و دیلمان به حكومت پرداختند. جعفر محمد (حك320-350ق/932-961م) و پسرش ابوالحسن مهدی و دیگران در پی احیای قدرت علویان برآمدند امّا هر یك آلت دست امیران زیاری، بویهی شدند.&lt;sup&gt;8&lt;/sup&gt;
