احمد برادر كوچكتر [[غزالی، امام ابوحامد محمد بن محمد|امام محمد غزالی]]<sup>*</sup> و از فقهای مذهب [[شافعی]] بود.<sup>1</sup> در خردسالی یتیم شد و همراه برادرش تحت سرپرستی ابو علی احمد رادكانی قرار گرفت.<sup>2</sup> در جوانی ابتدا به تحصیل دانشهای گوناگون به ویژه فقه همت گماشت.<sup>3</sup> پس از آن به سیر و سلوك روی آورد و با استفاده از صحبت مشایخ و گوشهگیری از خلق به كشف و شهود نائل شد.<sup>4</sup> در طریقت چون برادرش امام محمد نزد ابوبكر نساج شاگردی كرد. پیرامون 10 سال (از 488-499ق / 1095-1106م) به نیابت امام محمد در نظامیة بغداد به تدریس پرداخت. افزون بر وعظ، وجد و سماع را بسیار میپسندید.<sup>5</sup> مریدان و شاگردان زیادی از جمله عین القضاة همدانی، ابوالفضل بغدادی، ابوالنجیب سهروردی و سنایی غزنوی را تربیت كرد.<sup>6</sup> گویند وجود او از عوامل اصلی توجه امام محمد غزالی به طریقة صوفیان بود.<sup>7</sup> سرانجام در قزوین درگذشت و در محلهای كه امروز به نام احمدیه شهرت دارد، به خاك سپرده شد.<sup>8</sup> از جمله آثارش میتوان ''سوانح العشاق، لباب الاحیاء'' (خلاصة ''احیاء علوم الدین'' برادرش است)''، بحرالحقیقة، الذخیرة فی علم البصیرة، رسالة العشقیه و مكاتیب'' را نام برد.<sup>9</sup> ''سوانح العشاق'' نخستین اثر مستقلی است كه به زبان فارسی دربارة عشق نوشته شده است.<sup>10</sup> <br />
