این فرهنگ را كه به ''فرهنگ ناظم الاطباء'' و ''فرنودسار'' نیز شهرت دارد، میرزا علی اكبرخان نفیسی (د 1303ش)، از پزشكان مشهور دورة ناصری و صاحب آثار بسیار در اوایل سدة 14ق تألیف كرده است.<sup>1</sup> وی در پنجاه سالگی تألیف این اثر را آغاز كرد و پس از بیست و پنج سال تألیف آن را به پایان رساند. نسخة اصلی كتاب شامل 4 مجلّد بزرگ است كه بخش بزرگی از آن به خطّ مؤلف نوشته شده است.<sup>2</sup> این فرهنگ حاوی 99552 لغت عربی و 58879 لغت فارسی است و روی هم 158431 لغت دارد. افزون براین، در آن لغاتی از تركی، یونانی و جز آنها آمده است. گه گاه نیز خلاصهای از علوم و آگاهیها به روش دایرةالمعارف در آن نقل شده است. گاه به اسامی تاریخی و جغرافیایی ایران و اسلام و ممالك دیگر نیز نظر دارد.<sup>3</sup> نفیسی در تألیف فرهنگ خود از كتابهای معتبر لغت عرب مانند ''قاموس، شرحِ قاموس، صِحاحُاللُغه، مَجمعُالْبَحرین'' و ''مُنتهیالأرب'' و نیز كتابهای لغت فارسی نظیر ''برهان قاطع، فرهنگ انجمن آرای ناصری، فرهنگ رشیدی'' و ''فرهنگ سُروری'' استفاده كرده است. همچنین چند فرهنگ بزرگ فارسی را كه خاورشناسان نوشتهاند، مانند ''فرهنگ فارسی به انگلیسی'' ریچاردسن[1]، جانسن[2] و استینگاس[3] در دست داشته است.<sup>4</sup> ''فرهنگ نفیسی'' را نخستین بار سعید نفیسی، فرزند مؤلف، میان 1318 تا 1343ش در 5 مجلّد با مقدمة محمدعلی فروغی به چاپ رساند. بار دیگر آن را كتابخانة خیام تهران منتشر كرد.<sup>5</sup> <br />
