قابوس بن زيار چهارمين و مشهورترين امير آلزيار (حك 366-371 و 388-403ق / 977-981 و 998-1011م) بود. پس از مرگ وشمگير در 357ق / 968م پسر بزرگش بيستون به امارت گرگان و طبرستانرسيد. اما در 366ق قابوس با ياري سامانيان او را خلع و خود به تخت نشست.<sup>1</sup><br />

قابوس در 369ق / 979م در جنگ فخرالدوله ديلمي با برادرانش عضدالدوله و مؤيدالدوله به كمك اوبرخاست. در 371ق پس از شكست از عضدالدوله، همراه فخرالدوله به نيشابور گريخت و 18 سال در آنجا در پناه سامانيان زيست.<sup>2</sup> در 388ق بار ديگر بر گرگان و طبرستان استيلا يافت و تا 403ق در آنجا حكومت كرد.<sup>3</sup> در همين سال با همدستي برخي از سرداران و پسرش منوچهر در قلعة «جِناشْك»، ميان جرجان و استرآباد، محبوس و سپس كشته شد.<sup>4</sup><br />

وي از نوابغ دورة خود بود. افزون بر ادب و انشاي فارسي در نظم و نثر عربي دستي داشت. خط ثلث و نسخ را نيز نيكو مينوشت. رسائل او در مجموعهاي به نام ''كمالالبلاغه'' توسط ابوالحسن علي بنمحمد يزدادي گردآوري و چاپ شده است.<sup>5</sup><br />

آرامگاه او در گنبد قابوس ساختة خود او و از مهمترين بناهاي ايران در سدة 4 ق است.<sup>6</sup> ابوريحان بيروني ''الآثارالباقية'' را در 390ق / 1000م به نام وي نوشت.'''<sup>7</sup>''' <br />
