آقا عبدالرحيم مشيزي(بردسيري) پدر ميرزا آقاخان از ملاكان معتبر كرمان و اجداد و خانوادة او صاحب نام و مكنت و اهل علم و عرفان با تعلق خاطر به طريقة نعمت اللهيه بودند.<sup>1</sup><br />

ميرزا آقاخان تحصيلات اصلي را با آموختن ادبيات، تاريخ، اصول، فقه و حديث، رياضيات و منطق، حكمت وعرفان، طب قديم و.... در كرمان به انجام رساند و و از معلماني مانند ملاجعفر پدر شيخ احمد روحي كرماني، رفيق و شريك رنج و راحت زندگي خود كه تا آخر عمر با هم بودند، حاجي آقا صادق و سيدجواد كربلايي آموخت. او كه از خانوادهاي متمول بود در زمان حكمراني مستبدانة عبدالحميد ميرزا ناصرالدوله فرمانفرما با او كنار نيامد و به ناچار مخفيانه به اصفهان و از آنجا با دوست ديرينهاش شيخ احمد روحي به تهران، مشهد، استانبول و به قبرس رفت و در قبرس آن دو با دختران رهبر بابي ميرزا يحيي نوري معروف به صبح ازل، ازدواج كردند. او در نهايت فقر روزگار ميگذرانيد و با روزنامههاي اختر، استانبول و قانون همكاري داشت و با روشنفكراني چون ميرزا ملكم خان به تبادل آراء پرداخت.<sup>3</sup><br />

به زودي در جرگة گروه اتحاد اسلام به رهبري سيد جمالالدين اسدآبادي پيوست و با علماي ايراني مقيم عراق به مكاتبه پرداخت. فعاليتهاي او و همراهانش بر ضد ناصرالدين شاه در زماني بود كه ميرزا رضاي كرماني شاه را كشت. آقا خان، شيخ احمد روحي و حسنخان خبيرالملك توسط دولت عثماني به ايران فرستاده شدند<sup>4</sup> و به دستور محمدعلي ميرزا پسر مظفرالدين شاه كه در تبريز در مقام وليعهدي بود، آنان را سر بريدند.(صفر1314ق / م)<sup>5</sup>.<br />

برخي او را «نمايندة كامل عيار فرهنگ ايراني»<sup>6</sup> و برخي «طلايهدار برجسته انديشه نوگرايانه در ايران»<sup>7</sup> خواندهاند. آشنايي و تسلط بر زبانهاي خارجي و تسلط بر تاريخ به ويژه تاريخ ايران باستان، بهرهمندي از توانايي ادبي در گفتار و نوشتار، دستيابي به منابع علمي تاريخي و سياسي اروپا باعث شد در ميان روشنفكران ايراني عصر قاجار كه در بروز نهضتهاي فكري تأثير بسيار داشتند متمايز و نامآور شود. آئينة اسكندري<sup>8</sup>، نامة باستان (سالارنامه)، رضوان، آئين سخنوري، سه مكتوب، ريحان، صدخطابه، هفتاد و دو ملت. رسالههايي در تاريخ ايران، ترجمة تلماك، هشت بهشت و... از آثار اوست. او متحولكنندة سنتهاي تاريخنگاري ايراني و از متفكران بر جستة قائل به فلسفة مادي و اصالت طبيعت، معتقد به استفادة تعقل در تاريخ و مبرز در هنر نويسندگي و شاعري بود و در روشنفكران پيش از مشروطه تأثير بسيار گذارد.<br />
