ابوالحسن نظامالدين / نجمالدين احمد فرزند احمد بن عمر بن علي سمرقندي گويا در اواخر سدة 5 ق / 11م در سمرقند زاده شد.<sup>1</sup> تحصيلات مقدماتي را در زادگاهش به پايان رساند. پس از آن ميان 504ـ506 ق / ؟م به خراسان رفت و در آنجا با عمر خيام نيشابوري<sup>*</sup> و اميرمعزي ملاقات كرد.<sup>2</sup> بعد به قصد پيوستن به اردوي سلطان سنجر سلجوقي (حك 511ـ552 ق / ؟م) در اطراف طوس رهسپار آن نواحي شد. وي ضمن سفر از آرامگاه فردوسي نيز ديدن كرد و از 512ـ516 ق / ؟م در نيشابور به سر برد.<sup>3</sup> افزون بر شاعري در پزشكي و نجوم به مهارت رسيد. با ملوك غور/ آلشَنسب معاصر بود و سالها آنان را مدح گفت. در 547 ق به هنگام جنگ سلطان علاءالدين غوري چندي در هرات مخفي شد.<sup>4</sup> چون در علم عروض مهارت بسيار داشت، به نظامي عروضي اشتهار يافت.<sup>5</sup> به قول محمد عوفي<sup>*</sup> «اكثر اشعارش را در قالب مثنوي ميسرود و از نخستين شاعراني بود كه در شعر فارسي صنعت را به كار گرفت».<sup>6</sup> با اين همه، جز چند قطعة ضعيف، اشعار ديگري از او در دست نيست، اما در نثر فارسي مقام ارجمندي دارد.<sup>7</sup> شهرتش مديون كتاب ''چهار مقاله''<sup>*</sup> ''/ مجمع النوادر'' است كه آن را به نام ابوالحسن حسامالدين علي بن فخرالدوله برادرزاده ملك شمسالدين پادشاه خود به نگارش درآورد.<sup>8</sup> <br />
