 نام ميداني بزرگ از نمونه‌هاي كهن بازمانده از دورة صفويان در مركز شهر تاريخي اصفهان.<br /> <br /> پيش از دورة صفوي باغي به نام نقش‌جهان با كوشك در جايگاه كنوني ميدان نقش‌جهان اصفهان وجود داشته است و در گذشته نخجوان در شمال غرب ايران را نيز نشوي و نقش‌جهان مي‌گفتند. در زمان سلاجقه كه اصفهان پايتخت بود، ميدان نقش‌جهان، كوشك ميدان ناميده مي‌شد. شاه اسماعيل صفوي آن را توسعه داد&lt;sup&gt;1&lt;/sup&gt; و به دستور او حاكم ابرقوه (ابركوه) را در آن‌جا به قتل رساندند (915ق). برخي مورخان دورة صفوي تاريخ بناي نقش‌جهان را 1011ق/؟ م &lt;sup&gt;2&lt;/sup&gt; نوشته‌اند و برخي پيش از اين تاريخ از توسعه وساخت بناهاي پيرامون آن سخن گفته‌اند&lt;sup&gt;3&lt;/sup&gt; و از آن‌جا كه زيبايي، توازن و شكوه هنري در آن است آن را تصوير عالم هستي (نقش‌جهان) خوانده‌اند. <br /> <br /> در 1006ق/1597م شاه عباس اول (بزرگ) پايتخت صفويان را از قزوين به اصفهان منتقل كرد و با استفاده از طراحان، معماران، مهندسان، كاشي‌كاران، سنگ‌تراشان و... نقش‌جهان را عرصة ساخت و ساز شاهكارهاي هنري ايرانِ عصر صفوي و در خور اصفهان (نصف‌جهان) كرد.&lt;sup&gt;4&lt;/sup&gt; نقش‌جهان با 508 متر درازا، 5/157 متر پهنا و برخوردار از بازار، كاخ، مسجد، ميدان و دروازه بيش از 20 سال ساخته شد. <br /> <br /> در ضلع شمالي ميدان، دروازة بازار سلطاني (سردر بازار قيصريه) مظهر فعاليت‌هاي اقتصادي مملكت، و در جنوب، مسجد جامع عباسي (شاه)، نشانگر پيوستگي سلسلة صفوي به ديانت و ارتباط ميان اقتصاد و اعتقاد، در غرب، قصر شاه به نام عالي‌قاپوو ادارات پادشاهي كه محل فعاليت عمدة كارگزاران حكومت و قلب نظام اداري بود و در شرق مسجد شيخ لطف‌الله كه در واقع مسجدي شيعي و خصوصي به شمار مي‌رفت قرار گرفته‌اند&lt;sup&gt;5&lt;/sup&gt; كه بازارهاي دو طبقه اين بناها را به هم پيوند داده‌اند، و طبقة دوم آن‌ها به مسافران و غريبه‌ها تعلق داشت.&lt;sup&gt;6&lt;/sup&gt; انواع كالاهاي تجاري توسط مليت‌هاي مختلف انگليسي، هلندي، پرتغالي، عرب، ترك، يهودي، ارمني، روسي، هندي و تاجران ايراني در آن داد و ستد مي‌شد و شاه نيز در همانجا با شهروندان ديدار مي‌كرد و جشن‌هاي گوناگون را در آن ميدان برگزار مي‌كردند. ميدان محل آمد و شد خيمه شب‌بازان، بندبازان، قصه‌گويان، اسب‌سواران و تيراندازان،&lt;sup&gt;7&lt;/sup&gt; درويشان، روسپيان و چوگان‌بازان و محل مذاكرة دولتمردان و خارجيان بود. سفرنامه‌نويسان اروپايي از اين ميدان به عنوان شاهكار معماري مشرق زمين ياد كرده و حتي آن را برتر از آثار دنياي مسيحيت مي‌دانند كه 50 هزار چراغ روشنايي شبانه را تأمين مي‌كرد، جوي آبي به پهناي 5/3 متر و عمق 2 متر در پيرامون آن جريان داشت. نقش‌جهان از مهم‌ترين آثار مورد توجه گردشگران است كه پس از انقلاب اسلامي به نام ميدان امام نام‌گذاري شد و مقدمات احداث موزة بزرگ اسلامي در طبقة دوم بازار آن فراهم شده است.&lt;sup&gt;8&lt;/sup&gt;
