اين نهضت زائيده انديشه سه مبارز به نام سيد محمود طالقاني، مهندس مهدي بازرگان و دكتر يدالله سحابي در زمان اعلام فضاي نسبتاً باز سياسي در سالهاي 1339 تا 1340ش بود.<sup>1</sup> ايدئولوژي نهضت «حفظ اصالت نهضت ملي در چارچوب وحدت با جنبش نوين اسلامي» است.<sup>2</sup> مطابق مرامنامة حزب اعضاي آن خود را وفادار به دكتر محمد مصدق، مسلمان و ايراني ميدانستند. اين گروه در سازماندهي نهضت مقاومت ملي پس از كودتاي 28 مرداد 1322ش مؤثر بودند. در سالهاي چهل به دنبال مخالفت با انقلاب سفيد شاه و موضعگيري در مقابل سركوب قيام15 خرداد 1342ش دستگير و به زندان محكوم شدند. اما برخي اعضاي آن در اروپا و آمريكا به فعاليت خود عليه رژيم پهلوي ادامه دادند. سازمان مجاهدين خلق پيش از انقلاب و گروه ايران فردا پس از انقلاب اسلامي از بدنة نهضت آزادي جدا شدند.<sup>3</sup> با پيروزي انقلاب اسلامي ايران، برخي از اعضاي نهضت در دولت موقت مهندس بازرگان عهدهدار امور اجرايي و كشوري شدند و با كنارهگيري اين دولت و موضعگيري در مقابل برخي اصول قانون اساسي و جنگ تحميلي عراق برخي از آنان زنداني شدند اما فعاليت سياسي- اجتماعي اين نهضت به دبيركلي دكتر ابراهيم يزدي همچنان ادامه يافت. <br />
