در اوضاع آشفتة اواخر ساساني، بزرگان ايران او را در استخر به شاهي برگزيدند<sup>2</sup> وي به ياري رستم فرخزاد، از سرداران خود تيسفون را گرفت و فرخزاد خسرو را از تخت به زير كشيده هلاك كرد<sup>3</sup> به اين ترتيب ايران براي آخرين بار در دورة ساسانيان به زير يك فرمان رفت. در دوران يزدگرد، اعراب چند بار به ايران حمله كردند كه به رغم تلاشهاي يزدگرد، سرانجام به شكست ايرانيان انجاميد.<sup>4</sup> در نبردهاي قادسيه (15 يا 16ق / 637م) اعراب بر تيسفون پايتخت ساسانيان چيره شدند و در نبرد نهاوند<sup>*</sup> (21ق / 642م) آخرين تلاشهاي او را در هم شكستند و يزدگرد به شرق ايران عقب نشست.<sup>5</sup><br />

نابساماني اوضاع داخلي كه با هرج و مرج، اختلاف طبقاتي و نارضايتي عمومي همراه بود از يك سو، و برآمدن موج جديد ديني زير لواي اسلام از صحراهاي عربستان باعث شكست ساسانيان شد.<sup>6</sup><br />

يزدگرد به كرمان رفت و با وجود دعوت اسپهبد طبرستان به اميد يافتن كمك به خراسان رفت<sup>7</sup> شاه ساساني به سوي مرزبان مرو ماهويه سوري رفت. ماهويه (خدات كُشان) نيز به دليل مالياتهاي عقب افتاده و هم ترس از هجوم عرب، نيزك فرمانرواي طوايف طُخار كه بر يزدگرد شورانيد يزدگرد گريخت و سرانجام در يك آسياب دورافتاده در روستاي زريق نزديك مرو به قتل رسيد.<sup>8</sup> تاريخ 16 ژوئن 632م يادگار به تخت نشستن او سرلوحة تقويم يزدگردي است. <br />
